Confessions of a Writer

TuRnUp | My ‘soflynmythirties’ Journey!

Born on the 7th Day of September… Today, I am reminiscing about my 30’s era. I am at the tail-end of an era of growth that I will never forget. I wanted to share the ride with you. #hollablack!

#30 – Traveled to Ghana, West Africa, and completed my first novel as a writer. I talked to GOD at the Atlantic Ocean.  I received my day name ‘Abena’ – in the Akan it means WARRIOR!

#31 – Traveled to Cuernavaca, Morelos (Mexico) and met and spent time with the great artist that she was and is in spirit, Elizabeth Catlett. I remember her telling me to live my life, enjoy being single, and to continue my pursuits as a writer and artist.

#32 – Graduated from the University of Houston (Undergrad Degree) – My grandmother died the first day of my final exams my sophomore year! I returned to the University of Houston and obtained a Graduate Certificate in African American Studies. I cut my locks off; I had them for seven years.

#33– Became a full-time artist (AGAIN) and wrote my second novel. I did not get accepted to one school for graduate studies (My Alma Mater did not even take to me.) for Cultural Anthropology. My ego was shook. SAYWHAT!

#34 – Moved to the The Heights Neighborhood in Houston, Texas (hard struggling in Houston as an artist.) I made it though. Thankful to know the Espinosa Family (next door neighbors, ended up being extended family). And, I was chosen to exhibit my artwork at the Community Artists Collective in Houston.

#35 – Enrolled in The University of North Texas Library Science Graduate Studies Program, and was offered a job with the Library Science Department at UNT. Roxy Blue came into my life (my dog).

#36 – Opened studio1034 in Houston, Texas and created my Pseudonym – atlas brown. Her first book of poetry sold many copies! I completed my first 5K with a group of awesome ladies. And, one of my collages was chosen to be exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston.

#37 – Graduated from the University of North Texas (Master’s Degree) and then I lost everything that I owned a month after I graduated (hard year for me). I moved back to Dallas, Texas for two months with my god-family.

#38 – The random ish: I got to see Lil’ Wayne N Drake on my B-day! …Moved to Jefferson City, MO – 1st Job as a Librarian @ Lincoln University Missouri. I lost my mother of all things (June 2015). This was and is the most devastating moment of my life. Somehow, I still had the strength to keep going and ended the year traveling to San Francisco, California. I then topped it off by attending three dope azz concerts: Jodeci, Jill Scott, and Trombone Shorty & Orleans Ave. #verybossy

#39 – I am thankful that I woke up this morning to start off another amazing year. My last year in my thirties era is going to be one to remember. I am ready.

Happy B-day to Me!
