The Electric Life of Prince Rogers Nelson

Prince | 1958 – 2016

A strong spirit transcends rules.

Yesterday, I was going through some personal stuff… I received a phone call from my sweetie. He was listening to my rants and then interrupted me and said, “Wait a minute, Baby… Prince just died.”

I replied back, “What did you just say?”

He expressed once more, “Baby, Prince is gone.”

I sat down for a minute and was in another world; what I was going through did not matter anymore.

Right now, I still assume that everyone is still in shock that we’ve lost one of the best we’ve ever seen in artistry, music, fashion, and film. When looking back at his life and legacy, Prince Rogers Nelson was all that and then some. I believe that his work ethic and tireless effort to control his own destiny was pure genius. How many artists do you know would go against the music industry to seek what he was due (the rights to his music catalog) regardless of the status quo? Moreover, Prince achieved his goal and I believe this was his life mission to be replicated by the masses – own-yo-ish!

Despite everything, no one can dictate who you are to other people.

I remember when I first saw Prince on television – He was different. I never was exposed to a man of his demeanor – his debonair. Prince was an artist on all levels: COLORFUL. And, I wanted to “Kiss” him while riding in his “Little Red Corvette” all the while reciting “Diamonds and Pearls” in a sea of “Purple Rain” |  I was his (only) girl.

Electric word, life.

There will never be another artist that captivated my soul and allowed me the opportunity to relish in my own independence -no explanations needed. Prince was in good company in one of the greatest music eras featuring Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, David Bowie, Luther Vandross and Madonna, Janet Jackson and Cyndi Lauper. Yes, I love music. I love his.their.music. I loved his sense of being in tune with visual conceptions of music and the importance of theatrics and connection to one’s audience. He was that good to me.

I sat up for a long time and thought about Prince Rogers Nelson and his contributions to music and humanity. In like manner, I want to share this one factoid about the #artistformerlyknownas #princerogersnelson: When Prince read that in Louisville, Kentucky, Western Branch Library was going to be closed (which is the first full-service library for African Americans in this country) he wrote a $10,000 check to the Western Branch Library Association to support the library. Now that is what I call #verybossy.

Every day I feel is a blessing from God. And I consider it a new beginning. Yeah, everything is beautiful.
